About The Power of the Outside Eye
(Directing High Performance)
"The Power of the Outside Eye" is designed for directors, performers, writers and creators who want to take their original works to the next level of artistry, professionalism, and impact.
Participants will bring material to work with. We will explore how the director’s eye can tighten, polish and amplify the work. The course will be built around the individuals in the room. If you are a director, you will direct; if you are a creator, you will create; performers will perform … all with the benefit of real-time mentorship from a highly practiced outside eye.
Like a laboratory, only different.
Directing High Performance is a NEW course offered by One North Clown and Creation. Karen Hines is a Dora Award-winning performer and director, a Governor General’s and Siminovitch finalist playwright, Gemini-nominated television performer, multi-award-winning short filmmaker and the award-winning director of Horror Clowns Mump & Smoot. Hines brings tremendous breadth of experience to this work, including more than 30 years directing every show by Mump & Smoot (a.k.a John Turner and Mike Kennard) from the Toronto Fringe to Off-Broadway and overseas. This course will be rooted in the directorial techniques, philosophy and practice Hines developed as she grew from a very young director into an award-winning and pre-eminent clown wrangler – as well as a director of Canadian and American artists at theatres across North America (see her website at keepfrozen.org).
What is high performance? In this case, think anything that involves artistic risk, originality, heightened theatricality.
