Mask and Clown Intensive (Baby Clown) 2025 Welcome Pack Manitoulin Island, ON

Hello! If you are receiving this welcome pack it is because you have been accepted into the Mask and Clown Intensive (Baby Clown) running September 1 - 16, 2025. Please read everything here as it will answer most if not all of your questions.

For those getting a ride with us from Sudbury, ON to Manitoulin Island, you must be available to depart from Sudbury, ON on Sunday, August 31st by 12:00pm (noon). If arriving by bus or plane this may mean arriving on Saturday, August 30th.

If you are getting a ride back to Sudbury, ON from us on Wednesday, September 17, please do not plan for a morning flight or bus as we will depart for Sudbury in the morning and it is a 2.5 hour drive back to Sudbury, ON plus whatever lead time may be required at the airport or bus station. This may mean departing from Sudbury, ON on Thursday, September 18.

Your stay in lodgings on Manitoulin Island include the evenings of Sunday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 16.

Let us know as soon as you have made your travel arrangements, and if you need a ride to Manitoulin Island from us. We charge a small fee for this service to cover gas and wear and tear on personal vehicles.

  • All prices are in Canadian Dollars (CAD). We will require a 50% deposit to hold your space in the intensive. The remainder can be paid up to 2 weeks prior to arrival. In Ontario we have a 13% harmonized tax which will be added to the base cost of all applicable services (Workshop, Lodging, etc) a full breakdown of costs will be on your invoice.

  • If staying in Lodging with Fulfords Cottage and Tenting Grounds there is free daily and overnight parking for all participants of the Intensive.

    If you are driving yourself to Manitoulin Island, please come to the Love and Magic Studio first to check in with us before heading to Fulford’s

    Free street parking is available at the Love and Magic Studio.

  • Getting to Manitoulin Island can be a little tricky as there is no public transportation that will take you all the way to our studio. Please read the following carefully:

    For those who live outside of the Sudbury region, there are several ways to get to Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We are about a 4 hour drive north of Toronto, Ontario. We also have an airport with transfers through Toronto via Air Canada or Porter Airlines, and with Bearskin Air if coming through northern communities. There are also bus routes for the bus lines Ontario Northland and Flixbus.

    If you are driving yourself to Manitoulin Island, there are a couple of ways you can come: a beautiful scenic drive by northern highway all the way to the North side of the island, across the swing bridge into Little Current, ON, or by the Chi Cheemaun Ferry from Tobermory ON. to South Baymouth, ON on Manitoulin Island.

    *Note: Students are responsible for any/all cancellation costs associated with their own travel arrangements.

  • Workshop days: September 1 - 16, 2025

    The workshop will generally run each day from 9:30am to 5:30pm. We will break for 1 - 1.5 hours for lunch each day. As the intensive progresses, participants should be prepared to work into the evenings as there will be homework and preparation for the next days class.

    Students will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the studio each day. There will be a schedule set up at the start of the intensive.

    This intensive will take up most of your time and you should prepare to completely free your schedule in the evenings for the duration of the 16 days.

    The studio will be open from 8:00 am each day, for those who might like to come ahead of class to use the space for a warm-up, etc. There will be one full day-off in the middle of the workshop, most likely on Tuesday, September 9th. Classes are predominantly held in the studio, but we may find opportunities where we can work outside. There may be a few evenings where we hold class as well. Workshop days are somewhat flexible and we will allow time in the weeks for students to go into town to buy groceries or hit the farmer’s market. We will provide shuttles for those without transportation.

    What to Bring to the Intensive:

    Clown is very physical. You will need to bring clothing that you can move easily in with layers for different temperatures. The studio is not a climate controlled space and some might find it hot or chilly.

    You will also need craft clothing that you can get messy in.

    Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug repellant on hand if we hold class outside.

    Indoor shoes, socks, or bare feet only on the studio floor.

    Personal water bottle or hot beverage container, and snacks as necessary.

    Notebooks and something to write with.

    NO cell phones are permitted in the studio.

    We have some yoga mats that are available for participants to use, but if you prefer your own you are welcome to bring one. (not a requirement)

  • Your stay at Fulford’s Cottages and Tenting Grounds includes the evenings of Sunday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 16.

    When you arrive, please come to our Studio on Muchmor St. first. Our team will meet you, get you registered and organized with any bedding and gear you are borrowing from us.

    Check in at Fulfords is 4:00pm on Sunday, August 31, and check out it 10:00am sharp on Wednesday, September 17.

    There are 3 options for lodging, depending on your level of adventure, and they are first-come-first-served for choice:

    3 x Tent Sites: $35/night +HST - Use of shared outhouse/showerhouse

    2 x Bunkie Sites: $50/night + HST Use of shared outhouse/showerhouse

    5 x Cottage Bedrooms: $65/night +HST Washroom and kitchens within Cottages

    The lodgings are not climate controlled spaces. Summers on Manitoulin Island can be hot in the day and quite cool at night.

    Furford’s is located 2 blocks from our studio. Quiet hours at both the studio and at Fulford’s is 11:00pm - 8:00am. Please be respectful of these times for other cottagers as well as the residents of Providence Bay.

    What to Bring to Lodging:

    All bedding: pillow, sheets, and blanket. If packing space does not permit it, participants are welcome to borrow bedding from us.

    All clothing, we recommend different layers as it can be hot by day and cool at night.

    Shoes, swimsuit, rain jacket, shower/beach towel, and toiletries

    Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug spray

    Water bottle, and/or hot beverage container

    Flashlight or headlamp

    Games, balls, frisbees, instruments, ghost stories!

    Food for the first couple of days. We will bring those without a vehicle to get groceries on the way to the intensive and throughout our time together.

    Kitchens:

    Participants staying in the cottages will have their own kitchens. The cottage kitchens are outfitted with a fridge/freezer, stove, oven, microwave, sink, drip coffee maker, kettle, and toaster. All food preparation implements are provided, participants will just need to provide their own food.

    Students staying in the Bunkies or Tents will have access to our studio kitchen which is outfitted with a fridge/freezer, induction hot plate(s), sink, kettle, toaster, coffee french press, coffee pour-over, and bbq. There is ample space to store food and prepare meals. All food preparation implements are provided, participants will just need to provide their own food.

    Garbage, recycling and composting are available at both facilities.

    Please let us know if you have any dietary allergies that the team and group will need to know about.

    *You must take everything with you that you bring. Please do not leave us with leftover items. We encourage students to buy only what they need and share excess with each other to avoid food waste as much as possible.

    Washrooms:

    Participants staying in the cottages will have access to their own washroom facilities. Hand soap and toilet paper are provided. Participants will need to provide their own personal toiletries, towel, etc.

    Participants staying in tents and bunkies will have access to outhouses/showerhouses

    At the studio there will be porta-potties on site.

    Laundry:

    There are coin operated laundry machines in the town of Mindemoya. You will need to bring laundry soap and exact change if you wish to use the laundry. Participants of the intensive usually pack for a week and do laundry half way through.

  • One North Clown and Creation reserves the right to cancel programming if not enough participants have enrolled to make the course financially viable. We will keep participants updated about the enrollment status.

    We will make a decision about cancellation no later than 2 weeks before the course start day. All deposits and payments for course fees, residence, and shuttle services will be refunded in the event of a cancellation by One North Clown and Creation.

    We are not responsible for any personal financial loss as a result of cancellation ie. travel costs, etc. Participants take a risk on the cost of travel if no cancellation insurance is purchased.

  • In the interest of community care, One North Clown and Creation strongly encourages participants to wear masks during public travel to Sudbury/Manitoulin and at anytime if it makes them feel safer. We need to be wise and take care of one another so this work can continue.

    Should a participant become ill during the course we ask that they do everything in their power to keep the group safe. This might include masking in class and keeping a safe distance away. In some cases it might mean mean leaving the intensive.

    One North Clown and Creation cannot provide a refund should a participant become ill during the workshops and need to isolate, miss class or leave the intensive.
