About Shadow Puppetry Lab/ à propos de LABO le Théâtre d’Ombre
Jenny Hazelton and France Huot of Hoquet/Hiccup are performing partners in crime. Of the many creative modalities they practice one of their favourites is working with shadow puppetry, specifically using retro overhead-projectors.
In this course participants will spend 5 days in a laboratory setting testing out techniques of shadow puppeteering and colliding the use of this form among other story-telling modalities.
We will introduce multiple light sources: retro overhead-projectors, fixed, portable, and mobile luminaries, black light, and shadow-box. We will investigate multiple forms of puppet articulation using various sizes and styles of puppets, the human body, and found objects. We will play with projection surfaces: front, rear, human body and found.
We will offer construction techniques for the making of puppets and basic staging. All materials will be provided, but if folks have materials they are interested in trying out, they are encouraged to bring them.
Participants will have opportunities to work solo or collaboratively, bring work in progress, or start from scratch.
